Canine Assisted Rehabilitation for the Elderly is a non- profit organization dedicated to changing the lives of the senior citizens and shelter dogs of Wake County. C.A.R.E. NC recognizes the benefit these two groups can provide each other and we are dedicated to fostering their relationship.
“(Animal assisted-therapy) provides the patient a much-needed opportunity to give affection as well as receive it. It is this reciprocity that makes animal assisted-therapy a unique and valuable route to healing”    - Dr. Andrew Weil
After specialized therapeutic visitation training, our community sponsored dogs visit in assisted living facilities and seniors centers. In this way we are able to fulfill a two-fold mission of  increasing adoptability of shelter dogs while motivating senior citizens through the healing power of pets.

“The effect a therapy dog can have on an elderly person is transformational”   "… even one 30-minute long session of animal assisted therapy reduced loneliness [in seniors] to a statistically significant degree."

-Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, 7/02.

“Bailey reminded me of what it was like to have a dog. When he visits I feel like I am home again, even if its only for a few minutes”
